Fishing Tales 3

Sportfishing the Kona Coast of Hawaii

For those of you who think you have to be a professional athlete
or a huge weightlifter to catch these huge fish, check this out. . . .

631 blue marlin Kona HawaiiA winning raffle ticket begins this lucky streak. Rick Fields and his 11 year old daughter, Karly, won a vacation in Kona, including one day of marlin fishing and another day of turkey hunting. The Fields' winning ticket was from a fund raiser jointly sponsored by two chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Southern Arizona Chapter in Tucson, AZ and Volcano Island Chapter in Kona, HI. Karly and her dad, Rick, fished on the Anxious with Captains Tony Clark and Jeff Metzler.
Getting Karly her first Kona fish was the goal (a nice 20 pound tuna) for the first day. After catching a few small tuna, Captain Tony decided to try for a bigger prize, using the 20 pound tuna for bait. 20 minutes later, a giant blue marlin was hooked up.
The fifth grader battled the big blue for 2 1/2 hours. She wore out the fish, her dad, who was hanging on to her belt to keep her from being pulled overboard, and brought the monster fish to the boat. The blue marlin weighed in at a whoppin' 631 pounds. Good job, Karly!

HONEYMOONERS and the Anxious continue to be a lucky combination. Erick475 Zimmerman and his new bride from Illinois charterd the Anxious for an afternoon of big game fishing. Erick, a "first-timer" at big game fishing, had a goal of catching a "big blue marlin". The only excitement for the first three hours of fishing was watching the dolphins playing in our wake and a pod of pilot whales that the Zimmerman´s took pictures of. However in Kona you never give up on catching a marlin until the last lure is in the boat.

As we headed back to the harbor, there was a giant splash behind the boat and the purple softhead lure disappeared as a big blue grabbed it and began a series of spectacular jumps and ran off 500 yards of line in a "heart beat". Two and a half hours later a tired but proud Erick Zimmerman was posing with his 475 pound blue marlin while his wife took pictures. Congratulations to Erick on his first blue marlin.

Kona blue marlinTHIS 565 POUND PACIFIC BLUE MARLIN, caught by Rick Shedore (one of our internet customers), earned $20,430 for his 2nd Place finish in the Big Island Invitational Marlin Tournament, one of Kona's prestigious tournaments. For those of you who want to add to the challenge of big game fishing, there are many tournaments throughout the year that allow you to pit your angling skills against other anglers. The tournament entry fees range from $100 to $5,000. The Anxious consistently finishes in the money in tournaments throughout the year.
